A truncation operator first studied by Langlands and Arthur plays an important role in the study of many spectral problems on higher rank locally symmetric spaces. We will talk about this truncation theory starting from the upper half plane case and Euclidean analogues. Then we will give the precise definition and talk about its properties. Finally we will discuss its applications.
