
William Browder, Professor Emeritus, passed away in early February. He was 91 years old.
Bill was a professor at Princeton University since 1964 and retired in 2012. Browder made important breakthroughs in topology and geometry and advised 30 Ph.D. students and numerous undergraduates. Bill was president of American Mathematical Society (AMS), chair of the Office of Mathematical Sciences of the National Research Council (NRC) and elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1980, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1984, and the Finnish Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Bill came to Princeton as a graduate student in 1954 and received his PhD in 1958; his thesis was written under the direction of John C. Moore.
