In topology, the choice of a spin structure on an oriented surface gives a quadratic refinement of the intersection form on mod 2 homology. There is a similar story about 3-manifolds. I will report on joint work (in progress) with Artane Siad  where we suggest analogues in number theory for these phenomena.
